Yet Another Reason to Love Jon Stewart

The awesome Jon Stewart and the Daily Show reminds us that while conservatives are now up in arms over the sexist attacks on Sarah Palin, they were singing a very different tune just a few months ago. Watch how Bill O’Reilly’s attitude to teen pregnancy has miraculously changed, while other conservative pundits and policy advisors have suddenly become passionate critics of the sexist double standard.

How to write a feature article

I have avoided writing a post on “how to write articles” even though several readers have requested me to do so over the past year. I have avoided it for two reasons. One, I have not studied journalism (to know my educational background you can read my “About” page).  Secondly, I was never an “editor” - why, I was unable to remain in one job for more than couple of years at time, sometimes even less. I’ve have spent many years free-lancing as I was keen on being with my children.
However a reader (Priyanka) has been particularly persuasive and finally I decided to write this post.
This how-to-write-an-article post is about writing feature articles, not about what makes a good writer (for this you can take a peek at this post). I am also not writing about how to become a good blogger because there are many styles of blogging and [...]

Battlefront | Alexander Rose

Channel 4 are currently running a youth campaign called Battlefront, where young people across the country can produce campaigns that they have a heart for. One of the first to get my attention was Alexander Rose a young entrepreneur and activist who wants to do his bit to deal with gun and knife crime within the community. I think that many of the youth issues that we have will actually be solved by youth and this is a damn good way to start. An inspirational young man to look out for.

EDF awards South East - where are all the newspapers?

Last week the shortlist was announced for this years EDF Energy Media Awards for the South East. Look at the website of the Year category. We have BBC Kent, the Kent County Council enterprise Kent TV, run by a freelance media company, and Archant’s Ham and High.
What we don’t have is any showing by the big three. No Johnson Press - the News is very well represented elsewhere in the list but despite being JPs biggest selling paper, no sign of their website on the shortlist. No Northcliffe - despite the fact that AND has just been nominated in the Newspaper Society’s online awards - and no Newsquest. although the Argus has recently launched the new version of Newsquest’s template. And not forgetting Trinity, who are also conspicuous by their absence.
I’m not sure how much of this is down to papers deciding not to enter and how much [...]

“Demeaning to science, and insulting to scientists.”

There’s an excellent piece in today’s Times from their Science Editor, Mark Henderson, about the Large Hadron Collider and specifically the damaging side-effects of the alarmist coverage being spouted by some parts of the media at the moment. Meanwhile tune into BBC Radio Four on 10th September for Big Bang day and the big switch on!
